Vitamin E is composed of a group of fat-soluble substances which are divided in tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E is found mainly in foods that contain fat. The two types of Vitamin E most prevalent are alpha-and beta-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol is considered the most active form. Typically, tablets containing vitamin or dl-alpha-tocopherol or d-alpha-tocopherol, and the latter is identical to the natural form of the vitamin. The absorption and effects of vitamin E: Vitamin E is absorbed in the small intestine along with the fat. Absorption is incomplete. The absorption decreases with high intake of vitamin E. People whose absorption is decreased lipids also have a decreased absorption of vitamin E through the small intestine. Protects against oxidative stress: Vitamin E travels through the body in the same manner that fat (linked to lipoproteins) and distributed in most tissues. It is believed that the physiological effect of vitamin E is related to its role as an antioxidant, where the nutrient inhibits oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Vitamin E helps protect body cells against oxidative stress. The need for vitamin E is proportionally related to the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Excretion of vitamin E: Chances are that vitamin E is excreted in the bile and then faeces. The vitamin E may enter breast milk, but it is very difficult to penetrate the placenta.
