Bergamot (Citrus bergamia Risso & Poit.) is a hybrid citrus fruit between a bitter orange and a lemon, native to tropical Asia, but cultivated for centuries in the Calabria region of Italy.
This small, 5-meter-high tree belongs to the Rutaceae family, with large, dark green, ovate leaves similar to those of lemons, fragrant star-shaped white flowers, and round, greenish-yellow fruits. The peel of the pear-shaped fruit contains essential oils and other bioactive components, while the juice contains a unique array of polyphenols, especially a type of flavonoid called flavanones.
